The railway was the engine of a new way of life, inspiring Antonin Dvorak to his finest pages. In the absence of a new continent, these men and their know-how allowed Corrèze to enter fully into modernity, and the poetry of everyday life.

Depuis la station inférieure du chemin de fer Brienz-Rothorn (BRB), le train à vapeur et ses wagons ouverts attaquent une pente très raide en direction du Rothorn-Kulm (2348 m d’altitude).

For the more travelers among you, it will soon be possible to see it operating, with you on board, full steam ahead ...

Several trades worked for the construction of the viaduct and its accesses. From diggers to masons who defied the laws of balance to climb the two piles of more than 40 meters each.

Then the workers of the Arnodin company who assembled on site the pieces of the puzzle that had been made in their premises in Châteauneuf sur Loire.

It is thanks to the download operated by a steam locomotive heated with wood on the Lapleau side that the viaduct assembly could begin.

See the photos of this construction even more admiration     that we can wear to all these men who toil for three years and whose work we can still admire today.

The deck and the cables which suspend it form a set of 300 tonnes of steel which, during the tests in May 1913, allowed a 140-tonne train to pass.

The Tulle Ussel line was born from a project dated 1903 which took shape in April 1908 with the publication of the decree declaring it to be of public utility.

The difficulties linked to the route meant that it most often took the roads which linked the villages served; but there remained a major obstacle to overcome: the crossing of the valley of Luzège.

It was therefore decided to build a viaduct where the gorge was tightest, according to the system "  Gisclard  », Named after its inventor who had built one near Mont-Louis in the Pyrénées Orientales a few years earlier and who had died there.

Construction work on the meter gauge began in 1909 and on the Rochers Noirs viaduct in 1910.

This feat was greeted by the arrival on September 11, 1913 of the President of the Republic Raymond Poincaré. He took the train to Tournadoux, crossed the viaduct to get to Lapleau where Senator Maire Rouby was waiting for him in the middle of the jubilant crowd.

For nearly 50 years the "jerk  "  will serve small towns along its line from Tulle to Ussel.

Unfortunately progress and the arrival of trucks and cars will sign his death warrant. He will make his last trip on December 31, 1959.

DID YOU KNOW?

After the "Pony Express" of the Far West, the American West, the Corrèze Postal Service, in our jalopy.

The Corrézien tram  operated at the beginning of the last century in particular between Tulle and Ussel via: Marcillac, Lapleau, Neuvic, in this part of Corrèze which had no railway line, let alone a main road.

La Poste was of course interested in this means of transport and installed couriers on board.

A conveyor is a postal worker installed in a passenger compartment. He lifts the boxes from the stations and the box from the train at the end of the journey.

He stamps correspondence with a "wavy" edge. These stamps are called line conveyor stamps.

There was usually one wording for the outward and another for the return. These journeys were structured around the "Ussel / Neuvic / Lapleau / Tulle" journeys.

Regarding Lapleau, this service existed:

Lapleau to Ussel (and return) between 1914 and 1938 and Lapleau to Tulle (and return) between 1921 and 1939.

The Corrèze tram thus had everything of a great train.
